One of Europe’s longest-standing rivalries comes to the fore once again in the first Uefa Euro 2020 semi-final as Italy and Spain meet for the fourth successive continental Championship.
The two countries go back a long way in history with their first-ever meeting being way back in 1924 when they played out a goalless draw. Their first duel in a major competition came at the 1934 Fifa World Cup quarter-final. After a 1-1 draw in the first game, Italy won 1-0 in the replay which was the first-ever in a World Cup on their way to winning the trophy.
The two sides first met in a European Championship in 1980 where they clashed in the group stage. The first game was a goalless draw before Italy won the second encounter 1-0.
Spain’s first win over Italy in a major competition came in the 2012 Euro final when they famously triumphed 4-0 in what was the culmination of a golden era.
