The stage is set for the Vice Presidential elections today (September 9), as members of both Houses of Parliament will cast their votes to elect the country's next Vice President. It will be a direct contest between NDA's candidate CP Radhakrishnan, and the Opposition's nominee, former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy. Polling will take place in the new Parliament building from 10 am to 5 pm, with counting of votes scheduled to begin at 6 pm. The results are expected later in the evening. The election was necessitated following the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21, citing health reasons. With the BJP-led NDA holding a majority in Parliament, the alliance is seen to have a clear edge in the contest. The successful candidate needs at least 391 votes to become the next Vice President of India, and the NDA candidate Radhakrishnan is hopeful of getting the solid backing of at least 437 members (56%), well above the magic figure. Reddy is likely to get around 323 votes.
