Several civilians were killed in a firing incident in Oting village in Nagaland’s Mon district on Saturday evening.
The civilians were killed as a counter-insurgency operation went wrong, NDTV reported, citing unidentified officials.
There were differing reports about the toll in the firing. The Print reported that 13 civilians had died, while India Today put the number of deaths at six.
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio said a high-level special investigation team will conduct an inquiry into the killings.
“The unfortunate incident leading to killing of civilians at Oting, Mon is highly condemnable,” he said in a tweet. “Condolences to the bereaved families. Appeal for peace from all sections.”
