West Indies captain Jason Holder thanked legendary fast bowler Michael Holding for his “powerful” monologue on the Black Lives Matter movement during day one of the first Test against England.
Holder was the star of the show on day two in Southampton, picking up a six-wicket haul to hand his team the advantage.
On Wednesday, former cricketers Holding and Ebony Rainford-Brent, both working as broadcasters for Sky Sports, put out stirring messages on the need to educate people about racism in order to bring about a fundamental change.
“We need to go back and teach both sides of history and educate the entire human race, [otherwise] this thing will not stop,” Holding had said.
The video of Holding’s emotional message went viral on social media and Windies skipper Holder admitted that it had a deep impact on him as well.
“I must say I saw the interview with Mikey [Holding] yesterday, and I felt in my veins, to be honest,” said Holder. “To me it was powerful, I think he hit the nail on the head, he was spot on... I want to thank him personally for that.”
Holding responded to this by saying that he hopes Holder and the other players of this generation keep working on trying to end systematic racism.
